Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
The menu button doesn’t have a name. This means that it’s not clear what the purpose of the button is. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We will investigate options to improve this.
On the contact form there are no autocomplete values set. This can make it hard to understand for users with cognitive disabilities. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 Identify Input Purpose. We will investigate our form plugin to see if we can change this.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We will fix some of the simple issues immediately and will investigate options for those that are a little more complex.
Improvements
Some pages didn’t have a main heading. This meant that it could be unclear what the page is about. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We changed the way that the main heading was hidden to allow it to be available to assistive technology while remaining hidden visually to maintain the design of the page.
Some pages skipped heading levels. This could have been confusing as it appeared the user had missed a heading. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We corrected the heading levels and used CSS to display the headings visually to fit the design of the page.
Some images didn’t have alt text that was the same as the text visible in the image. This meant that the information in them wasn’t available to people using assistive technology. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-Text Content. The alt text for these images has been updated to match the text visible on the image.
Some links had the link URL as link text. This could be confusing and frustrating for screen reader users as the destination of the link was not clear. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We have changed the links to be on text that enables the user to know where the link will take them.
There was insufficient colour contrast in some areas. This meant that some users would not have been able to read the text. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum). We have changed the colours used so that contrast is sufficient.
